My daughter and I are going on a short term mission trip this year to Nicaragua. We are attempting to raise money for our trip. As you know things are more expensive these days and any support would be greatly appreciated. If you can't afford to give monetarily, we would appreciate your support in prayer as well.
How much it will cost: Approximately $4,400-5,000
About Nicaragua: Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, bordered by Honduras to the north, the Caribbean to the east, Costa Rica to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Managua is the country's capital and largest city. As of 2015, it was estimated to be the third largest city in Central America. The capital Managua is the biggest city, with an estimated population of 1,042,641 in 2016. In 2005, over 5 million people lived in the Pacific, Central and North regions, and 700,000 in the Caribbean region.
Nicaragua's multiethnic population of six million includes people of mestizo, Indigenous, European and African heritage. The main language is Spanish. Indigenous tribes on the Mosquito Coast speak their own languages and English. Nicaragua is among the poorest countries in the Americas. According to the United Nations Development Program, 48% of the population of Nicaragua live below the poverty line, 79.9% of the population live with less than $2 per day. According to UN figures, 80% of the indigenous people (who make up 5% of the population) live on less than $1 per day.
Young Life Nicaragua: Kids in Nicaragua have a right to know Jesus personally. Young Life leaders in Nicaragua are meeting kids where they are at in life and walking alongside them. With ministry for high school and university students, Young Life Nicaragua is helping to grow disciple-making leaders for the Kingdom of God. Young Life Nicaragua is also home to La Finca, a Young Life camp and coffee farm (41 & Change) hidden in the mountains of Matagalpa. The coffee produced at 41 & Change helps raise money to send local Nicaraguan kids and kids all around the world to Young Life camp.
What we will be doing: Partnering with Young Life Nicaragua to reach young people in the city. This may include helping them learn English through conversation, various work projects, attending Young Life meetings and other church services. As we narrow down the team that is going, we will work with Young Life staff in Nicaragua to design the ministry opportunities for this trip. Keep in mind that plans may change as other cultures, particularly Latin culture, tend to operate differently than American culture when it comes to time management and planning. It’s important to be flexible and remember that relationships are the most important consideration in Latin culture and are ultimately why we are going.
